1836<1/2 C> Original. EO-12, B-1, High R.5. PR64 Brown NGC. PR60 EAC. Small date, 3 low; Large berries. Attributed as Cohen's EO-12, but not listed as such in the second edition of his reference. These Original strikes and the later First Restrikes of 1836 are both from the same physical pair of dies, thus attribution can be quite challenging. In his Half Cent Encyclopedia, Breen gave a roster of 1836 Original Half Cents. His census lists a total of 35 different coins.
The later restrikes have evidence of obverse die buckling, as well as squared-off borders. The difference in the appearance of the border on both sides, outside of the dentils, is unmistakable, once it becomes familiar. It has been reported that all Proof coins of the 19th century were struck on a screw press, although the difference in border detail suggests that the restrikes may have been coined with steam power. Both sides of this example have dark bluish-brown color with considerable mint red on the reverse. An old scratch on Liberty's cheek will serve as an identifier for this specimen.
Ex: Eugene Gardner (Stack's, 2/1965), lot 1112; Coin Galleries (11/1985), lot 1561; Roger S.
