1835 N-9 R4 PCGS graded AU53. PCGS graded AU-53. Head of 1834 with Large 8 and Stars. Glossy light chocolate brown mixed with slightly darker chocolate toning on the obverse. The surfaces are smooth, but there are three old scratches on the obverse and two on the reverse. These are located high on the neck, along the dentil tips under star 3, above star 4, at EN in CENT, down from the O in ONE, and between the R & I in AMERICA. The scratches all blend perfectly into the attractive toning but they do catch your eye. M-LDS with a very strong die crack through the tops of ERIC to the rim at either end plus an extension up from between the E & R to the rim above. The section outside the crack is depressed as a sunken retained cud, strongest over the E. A rare intermediate die state, tied for finest of the state according to the Noyes census. Called EF45 net VF30 and tied for CC#7 overall in the Noyes census, his photo #28728. Bland says VF35 and tied for CC#4. Our grade is EF40 net VF30. PCGS Population 1; 1 finer in 58.
