1835 H10C Small Date, Small 5C MS67 PCGS. V-1, LM-11, R.4. Only two die marriages (V-1 and V-7) of the 1835 Half Dime combine a Small Date obverse with a Small 5C reverse. V-1 is considerably scarcer than V-7 (R.1), particularly in higher grades. In fact, Logan and McCloskey (1998) state that "high grade examples of this die marriage are rare," and they call attention to an AU representative in Rarcoa's May 1977 Freeman Sale as a noteworthy example. The present Superb Gem is significantly finer than any other 1835 Half Dime of the V-1 die marriage that we can remember handling, and it most certainly qualifies for Condition Census standing. The surfaces are mostly untoned with rich, swirling, frosty mint luster. Every feature is boldly defined, and we cannot find a single noteworthy abrasion. Clashmarks (as struck) are seen in the fields, and a tiny, pale spot at the obverse denticles below the point of Liberty's bust is noted for pedigree purposes. NGC and PCGS combined have seen just two 1835 Half Dimes of all die marriage at the MS67 level, and none finer (4/02).Ex: May 2001 Central States Signature Sale--The Christopher Young Collection (Heritage, 5/01), lot 6128.
