While the LM-8 is a common variety, the earliest die state listed in Logan-McCloskey is an 8.1 with evidence of several minor die cracks. This spectacular coin shows no evidence of any of those cracks. This leads us to wonder if this piece could have been one of the first examples struck of this variety. That is not to say it is a proof or a special striking, just that it was set aside at the beginning of the production run when this variety was minted. Each side exudes bright, sparkling mint luster. The centers are brilliant and surrounded by a ring of deep golden with cobalt-blue at the margins. A bit weakly struck in on Liberty's hair curls and on the left side of the shield, but the peripheral devices are fully detailed. The fields display a bit of semi-reflectivity, undoubtedly from being struck from a fresh set of dies. Population 1 in MS67 <img border='0' src='http://www.heritagecoins.com/images/star.gif' width=10 height=10>, one finer (1/06).
