1835<H10C> Large Date, Large 5C. V-11, LM-4, R.3. Reiver state b. MS62 NGC. Full cud at UNI. This is the terminal die state for this variety, and the coin is absolutely gorgeous. Sparkling white in color with strong luster in the fields and with a scattering of golden flecks near the devices, particularly on the reverse. There is a minor scrape in the left obverse field and another on the lower portion of Liberty's neck, neither of which amount to more than a trifle. Apparently a very rare die state as no example with this cud was obtained by Russell Logan during his many years of specialized collecting of the Capped Bust series. There is at least one other terminal die state example which is tied with the present coin known, but little published information has been available to report on these late die states. For advanced collectors, many turn to these impressive late die states and round out their collections with fascinating die progressions whenever they can be obtained. Certainly one of the highlights of the Capped Bust half dime series, and although not a rare die pairing, this terminal die state is undoubtedly rare.
Ex: Fred Borcherdt (December 1980); Delaware Coin Company Sale (November, 1980) lot 95. Envelope Included.
