1835<H10C> Large Date, Large 5C --Major Die Break, Corroded, Cleaned--ANACS Unc Details, Net AU55. V-11B, LM-4, R.3. Full Rim Cud touching UNI on the reverse. The obverse of this coin is rough and shows evidence of minor corrosion, while the reverse retains luster and has more natural appearing surfaces. Perhaps this coin was buried for a time with the obverse up where it was exposed to moisture over a period of years. Toned a light gray on the obverse, the reverse is more lustrous and shows attractive gold toning. Still a decent appearing coin despite the surface roughness.
A rare die state which is very popular with advanced numismatists seeking early, middle and late examples for their collections. The study of die deterioration is a natural outgrowth of variety collecting, as emission sequences are understood, and coins can be arranged in the order struck based on advancing die cracks and chips. In the later stages, dies sometimes fell apart, with larger pieces falling from the highest stress areas near the rim. In the case of this reverse die, the N of UNITED fills as tiny chips broke away from the die, increasing stress in that area. Finally the rim failed with a large piece either being pushed well up away from the die surface, or the piece broke away entirely. No hint of the dentils above UNI is present. This coin should make a welcome addition to an advanced variety collection.
Ex: Stack's Coin Galleries Sale (11/1989).
From The William A.
