1835 Charleston SERVANT Slave Hire Badge. Number 2113. A flat diamond-shaped tag with clipped corners and a hole for suspension, 66mm x 68mm. There is no hallmark; local silversmiths Peter and John Mood manufactured the badges this year. The elements on the obverse are as follows (top to bottom): "CHARLESTON" in a crescent-shaped bar punch; an incuse "2113" in individual punches; "SERVANT" in a rectangular punch; and "1835" bar punched. The condition is good with several creases and splits.

John and Peter Mood were the only sons of Peter Mood Sr., learning the trade from their father who was also a silversmith in Charleston from about 1785. They advertised themselves as "Wholesale and Retail Dealers and Manufacturers of Silver and Gold Ware" and their silverware is known and collected to this day. An interesting aspect of John Mood is that he was also a Methodist minister and very active locally in the education of black children. Many in the Mood family would take up the anti-slavery cause. The noted Pulitzer Prize winning author Julia Peterkin (Roll, Jordan, Roll) was a direct descendent of Peter Mood.

Shipping: Small Collectibles (view shipping information)
