Nice 1835 Charleston, SC “SERVANT” Slave Tag / Badge
1835 Charleston (SC), “SERVANT” Slave Identification Tag, Authentic and Original, Copper, Choice Very Fine.
Diamond shaped, 65 mm wide x 67 mm tall, Copper, small round hole punch at top for suspension, having primarily clear punch details. Medium lightly cleaned copper patina, having mostly smooth hard surfaces displaying clear legends and details, reading: “CHARLESTON - 2083 - SERVANT - 1835”. This rare choice example is vastly above average and is overall very pleasing in its quality and eye appeal. It does not appear to have been buried and dug, rather it is clean with its original surface texture. This is only the 2nd example of an 1835 dated Tag, the prior being in our EAHA Auction of June 11, 2005, Lot 396 which as a “Porter” type, graded About Very Fine (and not near as nice as the current example with some letters and details not visible), which sold then for $3,910. This type as shown in the 2004 reference book, “Slave Badges and the Slave Hire System In Charleston, SC 1783-1865” by Greene & Hutchins. A wonderful 1835 “SERVANT” Slave Tag for display.
