Here is an extremely rare coin as a Proof, perhaps one of just a handful struck in the Proof format from this die pairing. This date is usually missing from the extensive Proof collections offered the great "name" sales of the past, giving an indication of its true rarity. Unlike the business strikes, it has razor-sharp detail on the stars, hair curls, cap and drapery, as well as the eagle's feathers, claws, and the shield. Glossy smooth and mirror-like, it displays deep gray and old gold patina over both sides.
In his book Encyclopedia of United States and Colonial Proof Coins: 1722-1977, Walter Breen lists two similar die varieties for proof 1835 Capped Bust dimes that he designates as B.1-A and B.1-New. The reverses are similar in that both show a tall 0 in the denomination and a high UN in UNITED. According to Breen, B.1-New displays a small die crack that joins the tip of the lowest arrowhead to the border, but B.1-A does not show this feature. We believe that B.1-A and B.1-New are probably two different die states of JR-4, a fact that, if true, gives this die marriage a roster of half a dozen known Proof specimens.
