1835 C-1 R1 AU58 but Counterstamped JC in a Maple Leaf
1835 C-1 R1 AU58 but Counterstamped JC in a Maple Leaf. This is Brunk C-62. Lustrous light steel brown with darker steel brown toning on the highpoints. A swipe of darker steel gray toning shows on the rim above ERI in AMERICA, and the planchet is incomplete at the rim right of the date where a small fissure reaches through the planchet. Basically this is a mint state piece that was strongly stamped in the center of the obverse. The stamp is in the shape of a maple leaf with the letters JC raised near the stem end of the leaf. Brunk lists 6 examples, all on 1835 half cents. Although we do not know who is responsible for this counterstamp, it appears a quantity of new 1835 half cents was used as host coins rather than pieces obtained from normal circulation. A neat piece.
Estimated Value $150-UP.

Provenance: Ex Presidential Coin & Antique Co. (Joe Levine), 6/24/1985:1241.
