1835 $5 MS65 Prooflike NGC. Breen-6504,
1835<$5> MS65 Prooflike NGC. Breen-6504, First Head, McCloskey 1-B, R.3. Even though the 1835 is the third most common date in the Classic series it is, nevertheless, a scarce item to locate in Uncirculated grades, let alone as a Gem. In fact, this is the sole MS65 thus certified at NGC, either as a non-prooflike or prooflike (3/06). PCGS has yet to grade a piece in MS65 or finer grades, which makes the present piece the single highest graded by either major service. This is an especially attractive example that has bright yellow-golden prooflike fields and complete striking details on both sides. Only lightly marked, the most obvious surface blemish is a small ink mark from the tip of Liberty's bust to the obverse rim, this only being mentioned for pedigree purposes. The reverse field has many tiny strike-throughs of mint origin; these were caused by a small amount of debris clinging to the reverse die at the moment of striking. Clash marks from the shield, as made, cross Liberty's ear. A marvelous Gem that would have been described as a proof in auction catalogs of most prior generations, and an important opportunity for the advanced gold specialist.
