1835 $2 1/2 MS64 PCGS. McCloskey-1, R.2. Glowing mint luster characterizes this beautiful near-Gem Quarter Eagle. Classic Quarter Eagles and Fives were produced in large numbers, especially when compared to the earlier old-tenor designs, and they are readily available in VF-XF grades. They are occasionally even available in lower Mint State condition as quite a few 1834 examples were saved as curiosities as this was the first year of the type. However, the newness quickly wore off, and MS64 and MS65 pieces are extremely rare with only six near-Gems graded by the two major services and two pieces that are finer (both PCGS Gems). A bit softly struck in the centers, as almost always found, the rich orange-gold surfaces show only the most minor abrasions. In fact, the only mark worthy of individual mention is a very shallow, arcing scratch in the right obverse field. A rare opportunity for the advanced specialist in Classic gold.
