1835<1C> Head of 1836. N-19, R.5--Environmental Damage--NCS. XF Details. Fine 15 EAC. This cent was graded VF20 by Superior in 1991, and more recently it was graded Fine 12 by Bill Noyes. It is listed by him as number 15 in his Census, which records 25 different examples in grades down to VG7. Like all other examples, which are easily confused with N-14 of this date, the obverse is in a late die state with extensive annular swelling through the dates and stars, and the reverse is in an early die state with essentially perfect die surfaces. John Wright discovered this variety in 1982 as he was preparing a presentation for that year's Early American Coppers convention. The March 1982 issue of Penny-Wise told of the discovery. Despite the quantity of these that have been discovered in the last two decades, it remains a rare variety. The collector who has been unsuccessful in cherrypicking efforts over the years may want to consider the Reiver Collection coin. The surfaces have mottled olive and steel-brown, with lighter tan. Minor corrosion is visible but it is not a serious detriment.
Ex: John D. Wright (1986); Dennis Mendelson (Superior, 2/1991), lot 503. Envelope Included.
