(1834) William Seward Hard Times Token MS65 NGC. Lo
(1834) William Seward Hard Times Token MS65 NGC. Low-13, HT-26, R.4. This political token is related to the 1834 gubernatorial election in New York, a race that Seward lost. He is better known for "Seward's Folly," or the acquisition of Alaska, which many felt was one of the biggest mistakes this country ever made. Of course, history has proven what a far-sighted individual he was, and recent proposals have been made to depict Seward on the reverse of the Alaska state quarter dollar which will be issued in 2008. This brass composition token has lustrous golden surfaces with excellent eye appeal. It is somewhat weakly struck at the centers, as usually seen. The surfaces have some minor black spots as almost always, along with a splash of dark patina on the reverse near the border at 8 o'clock. If this were a copper issue, it would easily qualify as "Red." This example is among the finest known of this token issue.
Ex: New Netherlands 56th Sale (6/62), lot 183; John J.
