(1834) William H. Seward, Low-13, Rulau-HT-26, DeWitt-CE-1838-8, R.4, MS65 NGC. Brass. A satiny piece whose khaki-gold surfaces have slightly mellowed in steel-gray hues across the open fields. Moderate striking softness in the centers is characteristic of the type. A minor retained lamination is noted on the reverse at 4 o'clock. The brass Seward and Verplanck tokens were not listed in the original 1886 Low book. These were probably thought to be more political in nature rather than circulating as one cent tokens. Although not rare, in this exceptional condition it is quite elusive.
Ex: John J.
