1834 N-3 R1 Large 8, Small Stars, Medium Letters, PCGS graded MS63 BrownBeautiful lustrous light olive brown with overtones of light bluish steel and sea-green. Most of the fields are smooth and reflective thanks to a fresh die polishing. Sharply struck with trivial marks including a tick on the rim at star 2, a couple ticks right of star 2, a few light scratches at the dentil tips from star 3 to star 4, a small spot of slightly darker brown toning under the end of the chin, and a line of tiny ticks at the dentil tips over ITED. Breen called this cent a proof strike, one of five he specifically identified as having been struck for presentation (this is proof strike #5 listed on page 59 in the 1977 Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of United States and Colonial Proof Coins 1722-1977). It was struck between the conclusion of the N-4 strikes and the second round of the N-3 strikes (the obverse die is the same for both varieties with N-3 struck first and last). The famous King of Siam proof set that contained an 1804 Dollar was among those five. This cent is beautiful and the strike on the portrait and wreath is needle-sharp, but the proof status of this cent is highly suspect. Stack's called it a proof in their 1954 Judge Sawicki and 1984 Starr sales, but called it a prooflike business strike in their most recent offering in the 2016 Twin Leaf sale. M-LDS, die state b, with a fine die crack at stars 12-13 (same as seen on the certified proof strikes). But regardless of the mint's intentions this is a beautiful cent. Noyes photo #29119.
