<B>1834 Autograph Letter Signed by Future Civil War General Neal S. Dow.</B></I> One page, 7.75 x 11.75, in ink, dated January 7, 1834, Portland, Maine, integral address leaf signed, usual fold marks, small tear on integral leaf from when letter was opened, else very good condition. The letter petitions the taxing authorities to release Stephen and John Neal from paying taxes on land inherited a full year after the taxes were levied. Neal S. Dow (1804-1897) was nicknamed the Napoleon of Temperance. In addition to his temperance crusade he was also elected mayor of Portland and during the Civil War was promoted to Brigadier General. He was wounded and captured during the Siege of Port Hudson and was released from Confederate captivity in exchange for Robert E.
