1834<50C> Small Date, Small Letters MS64 PCGS. O-113, R.1. Star 13 is recut on this variety. The clasp on Liberty's gown has a curious doubled outline; small die lines show beneath. The doubled outline on the clasp is a trait shared with the O-114 and O-116 varieties. It is clearly an engraving job, one that looks to be the product of idle time at the Mint. In this way it recalls another coin theorized to be the result of excess creativity, the famous 1794 Starred Reverse large cent. This close-to-Gem half dollar has a lovely transparent coating of copper, gold, and aqua toning on both sides, with flashy luster emanating from underneath. The strike is attractive, with excellent detailing on Liberty's hair, the clasp and drapery, and the eagle's feathers, slightly soft on the eagle's right (facing) claw. There are no distracting abrasions, and the obverse die is lightly eroded. Population: 18 in 64, 5 finer (12/05).
