1834 50C PR63 NGC. O-106, R.8 as a proof. Only a few proof 1834 half dollars are known, mostly from the dies used to produce the Crushed Lettered Edge (CLE) restrikes. In the catalog of the George Byers collection, where this coin was last offered, Stack's included a listing of 10 proof 1834 half dollars, enumerating five proof strikes from five different pairs of dies also used for business strikes (thus unique in each case), as well as five other proofs that are all CLE pieces from dies that were not used for any business strikes. Although the possible existence of a few other proofs from the business strike dies must be acknowledged, we still conclude that any such proof is actually rarer than the CLE proofs.
This piece is deeply toned over fully mirrored fields with light cameo contrast. There are a few small planchet flakes and other insignificant blemishes on each side. The only pedigree marker is a short scratch from the left ribbon end to the bottom of E in UNITED. Certified population data is not meaningful for these early proofs as it does not always record data by individual varieties.
Ex: Jascha Heifetz Collection (Superior, 10/1989), lot 831; Remick Collection (Stack's, 9/1997), lot 829; Rarities Sale (Bowers and Merena, 1/2000), lot 169; George Byers Collection (Stack's, 10/2006), lot 1084.

Coin Engraver: John Reich

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
