1834<$5> Plain 4 MS65 NGC. Second Head, Small Plain 4. Breen-6502, McCloskey 2-A, R.2. The characteristics of this variety include triple punching on the 4 in the date, the 5 in the denomination placed halfway beneath the fletchings of the arrow, and the presence of a tongue on the eagle. After the amount of gold in coinage was reduced in early 1834 in order to stop the hoarding and melting of coins, the number of gold pieces produced greatly increased as did the number of coins seen in circulation. As a result, the newly designed half eagles and quarter eagles were set aside in moderate numbers as first-year mementoes. Most of these mementoes are XF-AU with a fair number of lower grade Uncirculated pieces known. However, at the Gem level the 1834 is really no more available than other years of the Classic design. Only seven Gems have been graded by NGC and two by PCGS with only one finer (a PCGS MS66). As with most high grade 1834 Classic fives we have seen, the fields on this piece are bright and semi-reflective. There is just the slightest "halo" effect in the obverse fields, a result of slight porosity in the planchet. Sharply struck for the type, there are no obvious or distracting marks on either side. An outstanding Gem type coin with exuberant mint luster.
From The Belle Glade Collection.

Important noti
