1834 $5 Plain 4 MS65 NGC. Second Head. McCloskey 2-A, Breen-6502, R.2. The 1834 Classic Half Eagle is the first coin of its denomination produced to the weight standard of 8.36 grams and the composition standard of .8992 gold and .1008 silver and copper. A change from the specifications that had been in place since 1795, the new weight once again allowed the Half Eagle to circulate domestically. Despite the fact that the 1834 Classic is the most plentiful U.S. Half Eagle produced up to that point, it is a very rare coin in grades above the MS64 level. In fact, NGC and PCGS combined have seen only nine coins in MS65, each of which qualifies for Condition Census. There is just one MS66 PCGS example finer (10/02). This is a fully original survivor with deeply set green-gold colors beneath orange-gold overtones. The luster is satiny in sheen with modest hints of brightness in the open fields. Sharply struck over all features with the exception of a few of the central highpoints, both sides are devoid of mentionable handling marks. A coin that the finest type set should not be without.
