1834 $5 Plain 4 MS63 PCGS.<p>The Mint Act of June 28, 1834 reduced the weight of all gold coins, thereby making them worth more in face value than in bullion value. A new design was also introduced this year: the Classic motif by William Kneass. Examples of this first-year delivery are by far the most common Half Eagle produced by the Mint up to this point, and the Plain 4 variety is encountered more frequently than the Crosslet 4. A strong candidate for inclusion in a Mint State type set, this colorful example is toned in reddish-gold colors that appear to deepen toward the borders. The otherwise sharp strike wanes slightly in the centers, but all features are sufficiently bold. Modest brightness is seen in the fields of this predominantly frosty example. Scattered abrasions, all of which are small, explain the MS63 designation. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Premier carry a 20% Buyer's Premium.
