1834<$5> Plain 4 MS63 PCGS. Second Head, Breen-6502, McCloskey 2-C, R.4. One of three subtypes of 1834 Classic Head half eagles described in Walter Breen's Complete Encyclopedia.. The presently offered variety is characterized by having a nearly straight, rather than rounded, bust truncation. Here's a lovely coin and indeed one of the finest Classic Head half eagles we've had the opportunity to examine in recent times. Both surfaces are brilliant, and the devices are frosty. The fields have a texture intermediate between satiny and prooflike. Most design features are about as sharp as could be desired; the only exception on the obverse being the curl in front of Liberty's ear, which shows a touch of striking softness. On the reverse a few feather details to the left of the shield likewise exhibit striking softness. All of the obverse stars show full radial definition, and the eagle's neck feathers are deeply defined. Here's an opportunity to acquire an issue which is not only outstanding in terms of technical quality, but ranks high in the aesthetic department as well. We expect many generous bids when this beauty crosses the auction block.
