1834 $5 Plain 4 MS62 NGC. First Head, Breen-6501,
1834<$5> Plain 4 MS62 NGC. First Head, Breen-6501, McCloskey 3-A, R.3. Fully lustrous and mostly brilliant with just a whisper of olive-gold at the borders. Most design features are sharp save for a few strands of hair above Liberty's forehead and temple. This is the variety designated as "first head; large plain 4," by Walter Breen in his Encyclopedia. The feature best distinguishing the variety is the rounded truncation on Liberty's portrait. Although Classic Head half eagles are readily available in the VF to AU grade range, Uncirculated examples are scarce, and because the "Classic" design only appeared during five years, 1834-1838, the number available to accommodate type collectors is paltry to say the least. Worth a generous bid from the numismatist who esteems outstanding quality.
