1834 $5 Capped Head, Crosslet 4--Obverse Scratched, Im
1834 $5 Capped Head, Crosslet 4--Obverse Scratched, Improperly Cleaned--NCS. Unc Details. Crosslet 4, Breen-6500, BD-2, R.5. The 1834 Capped Head is many times rarer than its Classic Head half eagle counterpart. Only 50,000 pieces were struck for the former, while the latter had a mintage of more than 650,000 pieces. More importantly, a high percentage of Capped Head pieces were melted, since their bullion content exceeded face even as they fell from the dies. Survivors are further distributed among four different die marriages, two each with Plain and Crosslet 4 logotypes.
This is a well struck piece that has only a hint of softness on the left shield border and the final star. Luster is subdued by a careful cleaning, but a thin diagonal scratch is noted on the left obverse field, along with a shorter, thin mark on the lower cheek. Often, a year or more passes between auction appearances of an 1834 Crosslet 4 Capped Head half eagle, and the opportunity to purchase such pieces is fleeting.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
