1834 $5 Capped Head, Crosslet 4--Damaged, Cleaned--ANACS. AU50 Details. Breen-6500, BD-2, R.5. Die State II. The damage noted by ANACS is not readily apparent and can only refer to a non-offensive scratch that travels from the base of Liberty's neck, across her chin and into the left obverse field. We agree that the coin has been cleaned, the effects of which have mellowed with time. An area of russet coloration appears in the right obverse field between 2 and 4 o'clock, as well as the corresponding area on the reverse. The Bass-Dannreuther reference estimates that only 45 to 55 examples of this variety are known in all grades. The piece offered here is a respectable example and will surely receive much attention when it crosses the podium.
From The John Stimson, Sr. Collection, Part One.

Coin Engraver: John Reich

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
