1834 25C MS65 PCGS. B-1, R.1. Die State I. The reverse die of this variety is a holdover from the 1833 Bust Quarter delivery, and it is the only one of the 1834 reverses without a period after the C in the denomination. Die State II-IV examples of the 1834 B-1 were struck after their similarly dated B-2 counterparts. The present Gem, however, is almost certainly one of the first Capped Bust Quarter that the Philadelphia Mint produced in 1834. A very early die state, not only are both sides devoid of cracks, but reverse repunching is still readily evident on the letters in the word OF. At direct angles with a loupe, one can also see remnants of another O and F next to each respective letter. Breen (1992) states that this repunching fades on later strikings. This issue's original mintage of 286,000 pieces is not the highest in the reduced size Capped Bust Quarter series of 1831-1838. Nevertheless, the 1834 is not a rare coin for the type in an absolute sense. As one might surmise, however, the majority of survivors are circulated to one degree or another, and the certified Mint State population dwindles rapidly as one approaches the Gem threshold. Fully brilliant with not even a whisper of light toning, this silver-white representative is awash in frosty mint luster that thins to modest brightness in the fields. The strike is razor sharp throughout, and the virtually mark-free surfaces have obviously been well cared for since the day of issue. NGC and PCGS combined report only 12 1834 Quarters at the MS65 level, and there are six finer (10/02). Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
