1834<$2 1/2> MS65 NGC. Large Head, Breen-6140, McCloskey-A, R.3. The new design type that signified a slight reduction in weight, recognized by a redesigned head on the obverse and the omission of the motto on the reverse. This is Breen's Large Head obverse with AM of AMERICA widely spaced, the second most common variety of the year. Deep, frosty luster shows in the fields with sharply struck devices and the only trace of weakness is on the central rounded curls above Liberty's ear, and area which is notoriously weak on this series. The reverse is sharp too, with well developed lobes of gold which collectively form the feather details on the eagle. Identifiable by a thin nick in the field above the eagle's neck on the reverse. The combined NGC and PCGS population reports note 20 pieces have been graded this high with a mere three coins seen finer (5/05). First year of issue of the revised standard gold content (slightly lowered) that allowed gold coinage to return to circulation and steer clear of the melting pots which gobbled up so many of the earlier issues.
