1834<$2 1/2> Classic MS62 PCGS. Breen-6140, Bass Reverse B, Large Head, R.6. This is Breen's Large or Booby Head style. The 4 in the date is large and extremely close to the curl. Liberty's jaw is jutting, and her lips are thick. The Bass Reverse A shows the A and M in AMERICA widely separated; the A is high and leans left. The Bass Reverse C has AME close, but the M is broken, missing its right diagonal, and the eagle has a tongue. On this Bass Reverse B variety--by far the rarest of the three--the eagle has no tongue and the AME in AMERICA is close, with M complete. Two other varieties are known. We estimate the rarity of this Reverse B variety at R.6, with perhaps a couple of dozen known examples. Our records show that this variety appears at auction much less frequently than either the Reverse A or C variants.
This piece offers luscious and lustrous greenish-gold surfaces. A bit of light field chatter on each side accounts for the grade. The strike is somewhat soft on Liberty's highpoint hair and the left (facing) shield border, but fairly strong elsewhere. Gold specialists will recognize this coin for the "classic" opportunity that it is.
From The Troy Wiseman Collection.
