1833<H10C> V-8, LM-6, R.6. Reiver state a. AU58 NGC. This near-mint coin is one of the finer examples of the variety currently located in the Condition Census just behind a couple of mint state coins known. It is sharply struck with a moderate coating of steel-gray toning. Just a couple of small marks and abrasions are seen on each side. This is one of the major rarities among die varieties of Capped Bust Half Dimes, with only 20 to 30 examples known and 9 examples reported in the most recent John Reich Journal Half Dime survey in December, 2005. Stewart Witham first identified and described this variety in the November 1969 issue of Numismatic Scrapbook Magazine. This particular coin is identifiable by a pair of nicks in the field between the left wing and left shield tip, another at the top of the first two pairs of vertical shield lines.
Curiously, the present cataloger (JMM) has obtained unattributed two examples of this variety each MS63 PCGS in two different Superior Stamp and Coin sales. One of these was sold to Russell J. Logan in 1996, the other resides in my personal collection. Finding scarce or rare coins was one of the aspects of collecting which Jules so enjoyed, that and meeting so many diverse and interesting people made this hobby a significant part of his life. There are always opportunities in numismatics to find unexpected treasures both in friendship and coins. The more you look, the more you will find.
Ex: J. J.
