1833 Charleston SERVANT Slave Hire Badge. Number 34. A slightly convex diamond-shaped tag with clipped corners and a large hole at the top for suspension, 68mm x 68mm. There is no hallmark; John J. Lafar was the contractor for this year's badges. The elements on the front are as follows (top to bottom): "*CHARLESTON*" in a crescent-shaped bar punch; "No" in a square punch followed by an incuse "34" in individual punches; "SERVANT" in a rectangular punch; and "1833" bar punched. The extremely fine condition with smooth surfaces, strong elements, and a pleasing light chocolate patina coupled with the extremely low number makes this a very desirable tag.

It is estimated by the authors of Slave Badges and the Slave-Hire System in Charleston, South Carolina, 1783-1865 that 3,356 badges were manufactured for this year bringing $7,339.00 to the city coffers.

Shipping: Small Collectibles (view shipping information)
