It is noted in the Parsley book that Liberty's mouth has a "pleasant expression." The 50 C on the reverse is very high. Study of this strongly struck example under a glass reveals that line 1 of stripe 5 is visible to the fifth crossbar and line 10 extends far into the right wing. This Gem displays strong cartwheel luster over smooth surfaces. Rotating this specimen under a light really shows off the attractive toning--shades of gray, blue and reddish-gold jump from the surfaces and are pleasing to the eye. A specimen graded PCGS MS68 may be the finest known example of this variety. It realized $89,700 in a January 2005 auction sale! The 1990 Parsley Condition Census is listed as (64, 63, 63, 63, 63). Steve Herrman's AMBPR lists the PCGS MS68 above, along with two examples in MS65 and two in MS64. It would be fun to compare this specimen with the five listed above to see how the Condition Census might read today.
