1833 25C MS65 Prooflike NGC. B-2, R.3. Two varieties are known for 1833 quarter dollars, both of which have the same obverse. The B-2 lacks a period after 25 C on the reverse, and is the scarcer variety. The obverse of this variety always shows marks ("pimples") because of die rust (A.W. Browning, 1992).
The Gem Prooflike example in this lot displays a medley of medium intensity cobalt-blue, gray, mauve, gold, and crimson patination. A pronounced contrast between the motifs and prooflike fields becomes apparent when the coin is rotated under a light source. The design elements are sharply impressed throughout. Strong clash marks from the reverse shield are visible on Liberty's neck, and clusters of "pimples" from the aforementioned die rust are visible in the obverse fields and devices. A mere two coins have been graded MS65, one each by NGC and PCGS; a solitary finer specimen has been seen (PCGS).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
