1833 $2 1/2 MS63 NGC. Bass-3030, Breen-6136, R.4. Few other early types can compete with the Capped Bust Left series of Quarter Eagles for consistently low mintage and rarity. Most were victims of melting within a few years after their production as the intrinsic value of the gold content exceeded the face value. Among the most challenging dates in the series, the 1833 compares favorably in rarity with all but the elusive 1834 Motto, an issue that saw almost its entire mintage melted. This bright yellow-gold survivor comes somewhat weakly struck in the centers and on the obverse stars, as is normally seen, with a series of adjustment marks noted across the eagle's shield. An important offering for the early gold specialist. Population: 1 in 63, 6 finer (2/05).
