1833<10C> JR-2, R.5. Reiver state b. MS63 NGC. A truly incredible specimen of the variety, head and shoulders above the finest example known to the authors of the John Reich dime book. Attractively toned in vivid hues of golden-brown, violet and blue. The luster is satiny and virtually all design features exhibit bold definition. The die state of this beauty is about the same of the plate coin in the John Reich dime book. There is a bisecting die crack that extends from the rim at five o'clock to the opposite rim at eleven o'clock. This crack is joined by a second that extends from the rim at eight o'clock, passes through the first star, and then intersects the bisecting crack just beneath Liberty's ear. These die cracks were undoubtedly the cause of the rapid retirement of this obverse die and resulted in the small number coined of this variety. Here's one of the true highlights of the Jules Reiver Collection. We can certainly proclaim it to be in the Condition Census for the variety, and very possibly herald it as the finest known of this elusive die pairing.
Ex: Kagin's Sale (February 1987), lot 3239; Bill Subjack; Jonathan Kern; Stack's Allen Lovejoy Sale (October 1990) lot 131. Envelope Included.
