1833<10C> JR-9, R.2. Reiver state c.--Improperly Cleaned--NCS. AU Details. This coin has been cleaned with an abrasive which has left heavy hairlines at the center of the obverse, and removed all but a trace of luster. Bright silver with a hint of gold starting to return to the periphery. Sharply impressed on the obverse, while the reverse is sharp on all save for the eagle's neck. A very late reverse die state with strong die cracks from the left wing tip, the ATE in STATES with a raised retained cud below AT to the scroll, and sharp clashmarks in the field from Liberty's head surrounding the eagle. This die state is not reported in Early United States Dimes 1796-1837 and is probably one of the last struck from this die.
Although not reported so far as we know, this die state is obviously a remarriage of this obverse and reverse. Most examples of the JR-9 variety show the early die state of the reverse or the later state with a single die crack through the right side of the A in STATES to the scroll. The obverse die was then removed from the press, and the JR-10 variety was coined using this same reverse die with the die crack through the A of STATES. While coining the JR-10 variety of 1833, the reverse die clashed heavily with the obverse, leaving Liberty's head outlined around the eagle. The JR-9 obverse returned to the coining press and additional coins were struck, and a new die crack appeared through the TE of STATES to the scroll, and a retained cud formed below those letters. Soon after this point, the reverse was retired.
Ex: Privately from ANA Sale (February 1987). Envelope Included.
