The surfaces are primarily olive with hints of darker brown and wispy mint red. A few tiny spots are evident on the obverse. Differentiation between proof and business strikes of this date can be challenging. Walter Breen considered pieces with a perfect obverse die, and those with the beginning stages of a die crack through the stars at the left (such as this coin), to be the true proofs, while all later die state examples were business strikes.
