1833<1/2 C> C-1, B-1, R.1. Die State 1. MS65 Brown NGC. MS65 EAC. Large date, small stars; High leaf left of center below S. This is the Manley Plate Coin for Die State 1. Fully prooflike surfaces. Although we would like to call this a Proof, it is strictly a Proof-like business strike with exceptional aesthetic appeal. Deep steel-blue and turquoise color. Although Walter Breen was certain that the various die states would be enough to make a determination whether an example was struck as a proof or a business strike, we do not believe that it is quite that simple. There are a large number of highly prooflike business strikes, just like this coin, that have been and still are traded as proofs. Most likely, the few struck from perfect dies without any evidence of obverse die cracks are in fact proof examples. Any later die state, with even the slightest die crack on the obverse, is more likely to be a business strike and must be examined closely. It is almost certain that those with reverse clash marks, such as this coin, are not proofs. Breen Die State V.
Ex: B.
