1833<1/2 C> C-1, B-1, R.1. Die State 1. MS64 Brown NGC. MS60 EAC. Large date, small stars; High leaf left of center below S. The obverse and reverse dies were each prepared fresh in 1833 for the beginning of production in the second Mint building. After a small quantity of proofs were coined, the dies clashed and cracked and were then used for business strikes. The quantity produced is not known, as the coinage of 1833 and 1834 half cents appeared to have overlapped for some period of time. This example is from the first die state listed by Manley for business strikes, and from Breen's Die State V, his second die state for business strikes. The obverse is cracked through the stars on the left, and the reverse has light clash marks inside the left part of the wreath. As with all Half Cent die state data from 1793 to 1857, we highly recommend the work of Ron Manley, and suggest that the Breen Half Cent Encyclopedia, be set aside. This is a fully lustrous example with chocolate and lighter tan color. The surfaces have only a few minor abrasions, including an identifying defect near Liberty's chin that is apparently a pre-strike planchet defect. Breen Die State V. Envelope Included.
