1832: Samuel Dickson, Limerick, Irish General Election posters
letterpress, various sizes

A collection of three rare broadsides relating to the Irish General Election of 1832, and the defeat of Samuel Dickson by the Whig party's Thomas Spring-Rice. The first "Death of Sam Dixon" printed within a broad mourning border, with a woodcut of a coffin, a skull and cross-bones and printed text, 54 x 77cm. The second "Inquest on the body of Sam Dixon" printed within a broad mourning border, with a woodcut of a coffin, a skeleton holding a rattan and printed text, 51 by 66 cms. The third "Funeral of Sam Dixon" with a woodcut of a coffin bearing two urns and printed text, 43 by 55 cms. On Sam Dickson’s defeat, The Limerick Herald, Samuel Dickson's political opponent, held a mock funeral and printed posters announcing The [political] death of “Sam Dixon”. Samuel Dickson later became MP for the County of Limerick in 1848. He died in 1850. Very rare early Irish political posters. (3 items)
