1832<H10C> V-14, LM-9.1, R.7. Reiver state b. AU55 NGC. Lovely dark gray in color with no surface problems or other detractions. This is a very rare die pairing, with a total of eight reported in the most recent John Reich Journal Half Dime survey (December, 2001). The strike is sharp on the obverse and reverse, and the reverse die shows the outline of Liberty's head clashed into the fields. On the scroll, a portion is weak above the eagle's beak, diagnostic to this die state.
This die marriage was first discovered by Stuart Witham in 1963 and reported in Numismatic Scrapbook Magazine in the November 25, 1969 issue. Since the publication of Jules's Half Dime Variety Identification Manuel or VIM in 1984, collectors have really beaten the bushes to find an example of this die pairing. Obviously, most have failed to turn one up and this variety remains one of the most difficult die marriages to obtain in the entire series. In recent years, the Russell Logan auction boasted two examples of this extremely rare coin, both of which were furiously fought over by bidders. Jules found this coin in an auction in 1984, just prior to the publication of his VIM and no doubt was one of his many pride and joys and a welcome addition to his growing collection. This variety will always be one of the corner stones of an advanced half dime variety collection, and obtaining an example at auction will be the only opportunity most collectors will have to secure one for their sets. The upper loop of the second S in STATES has a tiny die chip, but is not yet filled on this example.
Ex: Kurt Krueger's Sale (June 1984) lot 293. Envelope Included.
