1832 H10C MS63 NGC. V-14, LM-9.1, R.7. An extremely ra 1832[H10C] MS63 NGC.
1832<H10C> MS63 NGC. V-14, LM-9.1, R.7. An extremely rare die pairing which is seldom offered or seen. There is an example of the V-14, LM-9.2 coming up in our Reiver sale January 2006, and the only other example we have sold was back in 1994 in our October Long Beach Sale, lot 5163 which realized $2,035 and that coin was NGC MS63 (possibly the same coin as offered now). The surfaces are toned an attractive silvery-gray with iridescent blue, green and gold highlights in the fields. As to the strike, it is uneven, with full curls on Liberty but a noticeable area of weakness is found on Liberty's chest and the first star, and this weakness is also found on the scroll on BU of PLURIBUS--this weakness is diagnostic to most seen of this die pairing. Extensive clash marks are found in the fields of each die, and a thin die crack is found from Liberty's temple to her chin. Although the toning is a touch streaky and mottled, it is more than adequate for a coin of this grade.
This very rare die pairing was discovered by Stewart Witham in 1963 and reported by him in Numismatic Scrapbook Magazine in the November 25, 1969 edition. The Finest Known is apparently the Freeman coin that was called Gem BU by RARCOA in their May 1977 Sale, lot 324. While a few others may exist in type sets or are otherwise not known to the specialists in this field, it is probable that the present coin is the second finest known. In the most recent John Reich Capped Bust Half Dime Census published in December 2002, the reported examples of this variety (which includes both the LM-9.1 and LM-9.2 remarriage) were as follows: 60, 60, 50, 45, 40, 15, 10 and 4. This coin deserves considerable attention and will no doubt be a highlight of the current auction for Capped Bust half dime variety specialists.
