William S. Stowe was an attorney who settled in Clyde, New York in 1825, opened his law offices as one of its first buildings, and was one of its founders when incorporated in 1835. Frederick Douglass started publishing his first Abolitionist newspaper, “The North Star,” from the basement of the Memorial AME Zion Church in Rochester, New York. The The North Star's motto was "Right is of no Sex - Truth is of no Color - God is the Father of us all, and we are all brethren."
