1832 $2 1/2 MS63 NGC. Breen-6135, Bass-3029, R.4,
1832<$2 1/2> MS63 NGC. Breen-6135, Bass-3029, R.4, the only die pairing. Among the finest certified survivors of this issue, the present coin shares the MS63 level with only seven other coins between both major grading services (6/05), one is finer at NGC. A bright, semi-prooflike coin, the green-gold surfaces show a fully lustrous appearance overall. Both sides are typically marked for the grade, and a tiny black spot on the rim between the TE of STATES is the only noticeable pedigree marker. With razor sharp striking definition and outstanding eye appeal for the issue, this coin would do justice to any gold collection.
With a low mintage of 4,400 pieces, it is little wonder that the 1832 is a rare find in any grade. According to Akers, a surviving population estimate of 200 pieces is too optimistic given the infrequency with which examples appear on the market. At the MS63 level, the "small handful [that] exist in this quality range" appear so sporadically as to underscore the importance of the present lot.
