1832<1/2 C> C-3, B-3, R.2. Die State 1--Improperly Cleaned--NCS. Unc Details. MS60 EAC. Small date, small stars; Right curves of D and final S recut. Mint records state that there were no 1832 half cents, or at least, none were delivered in 1832. These records seem a little confusing, indicating quantities of Half Cents delivered each year from 1833 to 1836. The simple solution according to past numismatists was to state that the records were in error, and actually meant to record 1832 to 1835 as the production years. Such a solution seems a little too straight-forward and simplistic. It is also probably not the right answer. More likely was an overlapping of production from one year to the next. This is an area that certainly needs additional study. This example has heavy reverse die rust that apparently grows a little in later states. Walter Breen claimed that perfect reverse examples exist, but apparently that is not the case. A splendid, sharply struck example with lustrous surfaces that exhibit gold and green coloration. Although it is almost certainly cleaned, this example is nicely toned and has excellent eye appeal. Breen Die State II.
Ex: Robert J. Shalowitz; Jim McGuigan (6/1984). Envelope Included.
