1831 H10C PR67 NGC. V-1, LM-6, R.1 as a business strike, but R.8 as a proof. This obverse of this Logan-McCloskey marriage is identified by its repunched star 3, and the reverse is known for the location of the serif of the C in the denomination, found just beneath the olive branch stem. A relatively late die state for LM-6, with both loops of the second S in STATES filled, and slender die cracks noted from the left (facing) wingtip, the left scroll end, the lowest leaf pair, and the lowest arrow shaft. Prominently clashed on the field above the eagle's head.
Proofs are known for all 1831 denominations coined that year, although only a single 1831 half dollar is certified as a proof. That piece appeared in our January 2006 FUN Signature as lot 3188. The half dime is the second-rarest 1831 proof denomination. PCGS provides a census of three pieces, two as PR63 and one as PR65, and the present lot is the only NGC-certified specimen. The PCGS PR65 appeared as lot 80 in an 8/99 Bowers and Merena auction, and is LM-4, a different die marriage than the present coin. None of the PR63 examples have appeared at auction in recent years, and their variety identification is unknown. It is possible that the present piece is the sole surviving proof 1831 LM-6 half dime.
This specimen features three key aspects attributed to proofs. The strike is razor-sharp, not merely on the hair curls and dentils, but also on the claws and shield border. The fields are impressively reflective, despite a generous quotient of beautiful powder-blue and cherry-red patina. Best of all, the preservation is outstanding, without any of the faint field scuffs or contact marks typically encountered on dimes distributed for circulation. A wonderful opportunity for the Capped dime specialist to secure the single finest certified example.
From The Fleur Wales-Baillie Collection, benefiting the Khumbula Thina Trust.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
