1831<$5> XF Details, Damaged, NCS. Small 5D, Breen-6493, B. 1-A, Miller-160, R.6. The rarest of the two die marriages for the year, Breen 1-A is best identified by the perfect alignment of the second T in STATES over the I in PLURIBUS, although the size of the denomination punches differs slightly. Among the rarest gold types, the majority of Capped Head Left Half Eagles bear either an 1813 or 1820 date. The present piece has a few short, bright pinscratches beneath the ME in AMERICA, a lesser handling mark behind the cap, an inconspicuous scratch on the fourth star, and moderate obverse rim marks between 4 and 5 o'clock. Two planchet flaws at 10 and 11 o'clock appear to be of mint origin. A richly detailed olive-gold piece, highly desirable and less troubled than the NCS insert implies.
