(1831-34) G$1 C. Bechtler Dollar, 30G. MS63 PCGS. K-1, R.4. The Philadelphia Mint and its branches did not begin striking a gold dollar until 1849. Obviously, the Bechtler family recognized a need for such a small gold piece many years earlier, and began production of their own gold dollars in the early 1830s. The Bechtler pieces were the first gold dollars coined in the United States.
This piece, struck from bulged dies, is a rare and desirable Mint State example with frosty green-gold luster, splendid surfaces, and exceptional eye appeal. Listed on page 348 of the 2008 Guide Book. Population: 2 in 63, 0 finer (6/07).
From The Stephen L.
