(1831-34) G$1 C. Bechtler Dollar, 30G. MS61 PCGS. K-1, R.4. While this Bechtler gold dollar variety is not particularly rare, Mint State examples are seldom encountered. The Bechtler family of Rutherfordton, NC were the first and only prolific producers of gold coins in the South, and they continued operations through most of the 1830s and 1840s. Although they produced larger denomination coins, gold dollars were their primary product, filling a need that didn't exist until the first gold dollars were produced by the U.S. Mint in 1849. Although lightly hairlines, this example has attractive copper-gold and green-gold surfaces with faintly reflective fields and full luster. The catalog number assigned by Donald Kagin, K-1, suggests that this may have been the first Bechtler gold dollar variety produced. Population: 2 in 61, 5 finer (1/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
