1831<25C> Small Letters PR64 ANACS. B-4, possibly unique as a proof. In the Pittman II catalog David Akers states that the only true proofs of this date are from the B-5 variety. However, the fabric of this coin stands in contrast to that belief. The fields are deeply mirrored on each side with no trace of cartwheel luster. Additionally, the striking details are fully brought up in all areas and are consistent with a coin that was struck twice. Breen's Proof Encyclopedia lists only one known B-4 proof, from the 1951 (?) Philip Straus Collection, and we are uncertain if this is the same coin. The only problematic area on this piece is the diagnostic die crack on the lower reverse, a characteristic of B-4 quarters. This die crack would indicate that this was not an early impression from these dies, but rather a repolished version of the usually-seen die state. Each side is covered in deep blue toning with varying amounts of golden-rose around the margins. Only minor contact marks are present, the most helpful for pedigree purposes located along the jawline of Liberty and in the field to the right of the lowest ribbon on the obverse. An unusual and perhaps singular opportunity to acquire an 1831 proof quarter that is not a B-5.
